Zurich, Switzerland

 In Honeymoon Planning

Last week I mentioned that we named one of our cats Luxor after the city on the Egyptian Nile.  Our other cat is Zurich and I’ll tell you a little about the trip that inspired that name.  In 2005 Cass and I were married in a small castle in England near Cass’s hometown.  I planned a suprise honeymoon and needed to come up with a huge destination.  At the reception, I sprung out the itinerary for a Swiss holiday.  That next morning we boarded a plane for Zurich.

Zurich is a breathtaking city.  Known for being the banking capital of the world, Zurich is also one of the most picturesque cities you’ll ever see.  It straddles a river and is surrounded by lakes and mountains.  After a relaxing stay in the city, we wandered off to see the countryside.  We savored the best fondue on the planet at Stadel in the ski resort of Zermatt.  We enjoyed an Alpine horse and buggy ride in the posh villa of St. Moritz.  We ascended the upper peaks of the Matterhorn and shared a photo with a St. Bernard rescue dog. We rode the cable car to the top of the mount above Lake Lugano and took a dinner cruise on the water.

Cass learned to play an alpine horn with the locals. I represented the U.S.A. in a beer drinking contest at a local bier hall and took home the gold medal in the single stein category.  We had a blast touring the cheese factory in Emmental. They have unlimited free samples of cheese and chocolate as well as complimentary wine pairings.  We took a tour of Bern (Swiss for Bear) and checked out their famous bear pit.  The bear pit is home to a clan of burly bears who will put on a show for visitors if you feed them.
The shopping in Switzerland was phenomonal.  You can find every variety of Swatch, Rolex and Swiss Army Knife known to man.  The hotels were impeccably clean and the trains and busses ALWAYS run on time. Even the airport ran like clockwork (easily one of the nicest airports on Earth).  The air in Switzerland is wonderful.  There is no smog or pollution anywhere.  It is extremely safe and I would go so far as to call it the most organized country in the world.  We went in May and the weather was perfect.  We loved Zurich and my honeymoon surprise got top marks from Cassandra.  Truly one of our favorite cities.  Bis Spoter OC!
